At the Complex Fluid Dynamics Laboratory we study and develop numerical and computational methods for the simulation of multicomponent and multiphase fluids, including flow through porous media and biological fluids. We are also interested in the theoretical and computational study of the rheology of suspensions and emulsions.

Our main areas of interest are:

  • Modeling of biological systems: we are primarily interested in systems which involve elastic deformable bodies suspended in a fluid flow. Among the systems currently being studied are blood flow in capillaries, giant unilamellar lipid vesicles and bacteria adhering to a substrate.
  • Flow through porous media: We are developing algorithms for the accurate and efficient simulation of flow through porous materials. We are interested in the application of this models to the flow of oil, water and gas through rock of special interest in the oil and gas industry. Our goal is to have a model which incorporates the most important physics related to this problem in an efficient manner.

We develop algorithms based on computational methods like the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Lattice-Boltzmann method. We are interested in developing computational tools that are able to easily scale up by using parallel computing tools, including GPU computing. We approach problem solution using modern high performance computing paradigms.

Our research is part of the activities of the Computational Mechanics Research Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
